One Day Training for those with an interest in palliative care

In 2010, North Haven Hospice held 2 one day training days.

1.   Palliative Care – Something everyone can do - this was held on Friday 11 June. The day centred on the foundational knowledge for those working in palliative care and covered philosophy of palliative care, end of life care considerations, communication skills, basic symptom management and self care.

Here are two of the PowerPoint presentations from this day

Liz Car - The Importance of Communication

Andrea Williamson - What is Spirituality

2.   Palliative Care – what, no malignancy? - was held on Friday 30 July. This a day addressed the issues and considerations for caring for people with a palliative condition that is not malignant.

Review of this day:

Over 100 people from the 4 corners of Northland descended on the Paihia Pacific for the Non-Malignant Palliative Care Day on Friday 30th July.  Topics included an overview of palliative care within Northland and NZ, palliative care and the older person, end stage renal disease, medical outreach service, aromatherapy and palliative care, palliative care for those with dementia, symptom management and self/team care.

The evaluations showed a new understanding of palliative care as well as an acknowledgement of how much palliative care in already a part of one’s practice.  “That we do more palliative work than we realise “  and “palliative care covers a wide area” as well as an increased awareness of the importance of “making the little things make a big difference”.

It is fair to say that all who attended took at least one new thing away from the day and made at least one new connection within Northland.  A great success.  Now for 2011………… (watch this space)

Here are some of the PowerPoint presentations from this day

Suzanne Brocx - Palliative Care - An Introduction
Michal Boyd - Palliative Care and the Older Person
Tafale Maddren - ESRD and Palliative Care
