Shorts for Hospice 2020

Fundraise to help us provide quality of life for local people facing the end of life.

Take part with friends, colleagues, or even by yourself.

Life is short.  Live every moment.

Shorts for Hospice will be held on Friday 19th June (two days before the winter solstice, aka mid-winter, which falls on Sunday 21st).

So it’ll be pretty-much the shortest day of the year and yeah it’s winter, but open your summer clothes drawer and find some shorts to wear and fundraise for North Haven

Fundraising for a local charity by wearing shorts in the middle of winter?  Yeah, let’s do this!

Who can take part?

The short answer is: anyone

In fact, the more people who take part, the better, and the more fun it will be.

Organise to wear colourful shorts to work, to school, to your community group or service club meeting.

Or, simply wear shorts at home or wherever you happen to be for the day.

Need shorts?

If you’re short of shorts, there are plenty for sale at the North Haven Hospice Shop in Whangarei (cnr of Robert St and James St).

And, it shouldn’t matter if you’re a bit short of money, as they’re very affordable!

How does it work?

We encourage businesses/organisations, schools, community groups, service clubs, and aged residential care facilities to encourage staff, students, members or residents to wear shorts on the day AND, in doing so, fundraise for North Haven Hospice however you can.

How to participate:

Let us know if you plan to join in the fun.

Contact the Fundraising and Comms team at or 09 437 3355 (weekdays) or 0274 652 344.

We have resources available, such as posters, stickers, donation boxes, etc, that we can supply.

Ways to fundraise:

  • Simply ask everyone to wear shorts on Friday 19 June and bring a cash donation.  This can be for a set amount (e.g. gold coin) or an open amount.
  • Ask your business/organisation’s boss to match the money that you raise (e.g. dollar for dollar or $1 for every $2).
  • Offer a prize  (e.g. ask the boss to donate a day off work and raffle it to staff).
  • If you’re at home, wear shorts for the day and make a donation to North Haven.
  • Start a Givealittle or GoFundMe page where your group and supporters can donate online.

On the day:

  • Have fun showing-off your shorts!
  • Share shortbread for morning tea.
  • Run a second-hand shorts sale for colleagues who aren’t wearing shorts.
  • Challenge another team at work or another business to wear their shorts and then meet at morning tea or lunch (or simply share photos) to compare shorts.
  • Take photos of yourself / yourselves and share them on your social media pages (please 'tag' us) and/or email us your pics.
  • Follow the fun on the North Haven Hospice page on Facebook and Instagram.

Why does North Haven Hospice need to fundraise?

Whilst we receive some Government funding via Northland District Health Board, the gap between that funding and the actual cost to provide the specialist care and support that we give is $1.89 million for the 2019/20 year. This is what we need to fundraise, which works out to over $36,000 every week!

And, every dollar raised here, stays here; supporting what is an essential health service for local people facing the end of life and during bereavement.
