Our Place

Connection and Community

While 95% of our care services take place in your home, our medical and administrative hub is located at Te Whare Hūmārie in Tikipunga, Whangārei. Here, our dedicated team of specialist doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, family support staff, Te Tumu Herenga Waka, and volunteers come together to coordinate end of life care – free of charge.

As we overlook the historic Paranui we extend our services into the community, supporting around 220 patients in the community at any one time.

Each year, we provide care for between 500 and 600 people: around three-quarters have a form of cancer, while others have life-limiting conditions affecting the heart and other organs, or terminal illnesses such as motor neurone disease.

We collaborate with other hospices across Northland Te Tai Tokerau so everyone has access to the care they need. Our place is not just about physical care – it is about creating a sense of connection and community for those we support and care for. As we overlooking the historic Paranui Valley, North Haven Hospice | Te Whare Hūmārie sits on land blessed by Ngāti Hau hapū, and has  an enduring relationship with the people of Pehiāweri Marae. Our location has a history of healing and care carrying the mauri of everything we do, helping us deliver our care and support to the dying and their families and whānau with aroha (love), pono (integrity), and tika (doing what is right).

Our In-patient Unit (IPU), Te Whare Hūmārie

For people  who require closer monitoring or whose symptoms are difficult to manage at home, short-term stays are available at our In-patient unit (IPU), Te Whare Hūmārie, in Whangārei. Most people stay between five to seven days, and return home once they are ready. The IPU also provides a space for carers to have some time to focus on other matters or get some rest, while their loved ones are well cared for by our team.

Local Helping Local

Our services are available to anyone living in the Whangārei District and south-east Kaipara District, including Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Topuni, and Ōruawharo.

Our IPU premises are also used for patients from Te Tai Tokerau Northland Hospice care teams based in Kaipara, Kerikeri, and Kaitaia.

We work closely with other healthcare providers and relevant services to develop a greater understanding and delivery of specialist palliative care in our communities.

We're a Community Charity

North Haven Hospice is proud to be a community charity. We are only partially government funded each year, and our free services are made possible by the generosity of the Northland Te Tai Tokerau community – individuals, families, businesses, and volunteers who contribute their time, resources, and donations.

As a charity, we rely heavily on fundraising, donations, and the funds from our North Haven Hospice Shops. These essential contributions help us continue offering care for people with terminal illnesses or life-limiting conditions, as well as providing comfort and assistance to their families and whānau.

By supporting North Haven Hospice, you are helping Northland’s dying to live with dignity, comfort, and the best possible quality of life until their death. Every donation, every hour volunteered, and every purchase made from our charity shops provides the compassionate end-of-life care to all in our Northland communities.
