Care Tailored to Your Needs

We are so much more than dying. At North Haven Hospice, we are here to wrap a cloak of care around you, your family and your whānau, offering comprehensive support that goes beyond managing physically complex symptoms.

We put the dying in charge of their living, helping you make informed decisions and being in control of your care.  This includes understanding medical and clinical terminology, symptom and pain management, and the relationships between different health providers and how they work.  We also extend our care to your family, whānau, and carers, helping understanding and expectations, and providing support during this time and throughout their grief.

The care we provide is individual to you and your needs, maintaining your comfort and dignity as a person.

We support you wherever you live – whether that’s your own home, a family member’s home, or another place of residence. If you are in Whangārei Hospital, we can visit you there too. We sometimes recommend a short stay in our In-patient unit in Tikipunga, Whangārei, to manage more complex symptoms or a change in specialist medications.  This can also be an option when your family, whānau, or carers need a short break or some time to focus on other matters until you are ready to return home.

A small proportion of the people we care for choose to die at our premises in Tikipunga, as this is where they feel most comfortable and secure. Many, however, prefer to be at home for their death and North Haven Hospice respectfully supports either choice.

Supporting You Where You Live

95% of our care and support services are delivered this way and are for people of all ages, ethnicities, beliefs, and types of illness and conditions.

At North Haven Hospice, we put you in charge of your living. This means we encourage you to live every moment as you wish, while we support your ability to do just that.

People are usually referred to us with an expectation of 12 months or less to live and that time is frequently spent at home. Our community nurses, family support team, doctors and trained volunteers visit you when needed and we’re available on the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you’ve been referred to North Haven Hospice | Te Korowai Hūmārie and live in the Whangārei or southeast Kaipara Districts, we may be able to help you.  You are also able to self-refer if you have been told you have a life-limiting condition or terminal illness.

Our communities of care stretch from Hūkerenui and Whangaruru in the north to Ōruawharo, Topuni, Maungaturoto, east to Mangawhai and Kaiwaka in the south. Regardless of where you live in this area, our services are available to you, free of charge.
