How Local Cafés Are Sharing Memories Through Food

Food has a special way of holding our memories.

A favourite family recipe passed down through generations. A baking treat that always appeared at birthdays and celebrations. A dish lovingly prepared by someone special. Long after the last bite, these flavours and recipes can bring back stories, comfort, and a connection to the people we love.

That's the inspiration behind our new fundraising campaign, A Taste to Remember, and we’re excited to see local cafés joining in too.

From the 22nd June through to 17th July, 2026, participating cafés across Northland are choosing a special menu item that holds meaning for them - a recipe that’s connected to someone they remember or a dish they hope to be remembered for, and a portion of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to North Haven Hospice.

One of these cafés is Little Red Coffee in Waipū.

For owner Jacqui Mewett, participating in A Taste to Remember was an easy decision, and a lovely way to remember her aunt whose favourite treat was a keto scone from Little Red, and she would visit the café often after a walk on Uretiti beach.

Jacqui is donating a dollar per scone sold during A Taste to Remember, and it’s both a touching way to remember her aunt and a great way to support North Haven Hospice.

Some memories are too precious to fade, and sometimes, all it takes is a familiar taste to bring them back.

By visiting participating cafés, locals can help North Haven Hospice continue to provide care and support to the dying and their whānau in our community, all while enjoying a coffee and something delicious to eat.

Visit a participating café:

  • Little Red – Waipu
  • Country Bake – Waipu
  • Harbour Keys café - Marsden Cove
  • Flames – Onerahi
  • Café Bottanix – Whangārei
  • Milk and Honey – Te Kamo
  • Saltair café  - Ngunguru
  • Biggie Bagels – Whangārei (1 week only)
  • Rumours on Rust – Whangārei
  • The Anchorage – Marsden Cove

Every contribution helps ensure North Haven Hospice can continue to be there when local families need us most.
