Watch the Nelson family’s story, as they share their experience with North Haven Hospice, and how we helped lift some of the burden from their shoulders, so they could simply be together at one of life’s most difficult times.

Mother, wife, grandmother, and friend, Deborah was the rock of the family who would always go out of her way to make sure everyone else was catered for.

After discovering two large blood clots, Deborah was taken into hospital for what began as a relatively routine procedure to remove the clots, yet from there, everything ended up changing for the family. Deborah subsequently suffered two strokes, and her condition deteriorated quickly.  Then, the Nelson’s were introduced to North Haven Hospice. From the moment they arrived at Te Whare Hūmārie, they could feel the North Haven Hospice difference.

"If we needed anything, they were there. If we had anything, they had a solution... it just took the load off us completely because it was just done. We didn't have to think about it."

They were provided a space that felt warm, welcoming, and full of love. A place where Deborah received the specialist care she needed, while they were free to spend precious time with her instead of worrying about the practicalities.

"It provided that hospital-level care Mum needed that we couldn't give her, but provided a space that felt full of love, like home would have been”, reflects Deborah’s daughter, Jodie.

One thing that surprised the family the most, was learning there was no cost for any of the care they received, which is only possible because of the generosity of our community. Every donation helps families like the Nelson’s access hospice care when they need it most, without ever worrying about how they'll pay for it.

As Deborah’s daughter Jodie so beautifully puts it:

"To know that people have donated their time and their money and their efforts so someone can go through this process without a cost... it's humbling to know that your community inadvertently supports you during that time."
