Who to trust?

Robert turned 40 on November 9, 2025 and has Stage 4 cancer in both lungs and his kidneys, escalating into other areas of his body.  In December, he came to North Haven Hospice’s in-patient unit for the second time to manage new pain he was experiencing.

People like Robert are asked to provide us with feedback so we can assess whether we are providing the best possible care from a patient’s perspective.  Filling out the feedback form, Robert sung our praises.  But this wasn’t his first impression of hospice.

When Robert was first referred to North Haven Hospice, he didn’t know much about our services, what we did, what we were about or what we could offer.  He hadn’t heard of any previous experiences with hospice or any feedback about the care provided.  Robert was also very reluctant to let anyone else take over any decisions he was making about his illness and uncertain who he could trust with his health.

His first visit to the Tikipunga premises was following his admittance to hospital with severe pain and blood in his urine. North Haven Hospice had been advised and were able to support and look after him at the in-patient unit until he improved.  “I needed advice and I needed someone to trust.  Coming to hospice felt like a risk, and it was a bit freaky, but I was told I would be in the right place and I would be looked after.”

That first visit, Robert stayed for a week.  “It was amazing.  Everyone was great.  I was welcomed with open arms. The way I was treated, it was like having a second family.” Robert improved and went back home, keeping in touch with North Haven Hospice nurses over the phone, knowing he could reach out and ask any questions.

This time Robert said he was happy to return.  He knew he would be “in a good place here” and had had a good experience previously.  “I was so well looked after.  Everyone is so kind and understanding.  It makes a big difference to your state of mind when you feel comfortable and wanted.” Robert went home the next day.

“Everyone here does an amazing job, they couldn’t do better."

His advice to anyone who doesn’t know much about hospice:

“I’d convince them to give it a go.  I’d highly recommend it.  Hospice has a great deal to offer.  Staff sit and take the time to understand you, to hear what you have to say and offer solutions. Simple advice and help, and who you might need to talk to or go to about stuff.  I’m just really grateful.”

It makes a big difference to your state of mind when you feel comfortable and wanted.
